Global M&A for 2018 through May reached US$1.69trn in value, well past the halfway mark of 2017’s year-end total of US$3.12trn. For the month of May, high-profile deals like the US$79.7bn acquisition of Ireland-based drug maker Shire by Japan-based Takeda Pharmaceutical Company helped the Pharma, Medical & Biotech sector dominate the market. And while cross-border deals rose by 7.6% for the month, domestic dealmaking witnessed a 225% surge in deal value when compared to the same month last year.

Key findings include:

  • May witnessed 1,127 transactions valued at US$384.4bn, an 82.2% increase in value with 553 fewer deals when compared to May 2017.
  • Europe was the top region for the month by value with 408 deals worth US$187.4bn. North America followed closely behind with 354 deals valued at US$96.5bn.
  • Global private equity buyouts totaled US$42.3bn, a 26% YoY decline, while exit values rose 5% to US$56.1bn.
