Dealmakers: Mid-market M&A in Australia 2020

While M&A in Australia declined over the past year, appetite for Australian assets continues to grow. Among dealmakers this year, 65% say they are considering further investments in Australia, deals that follow previous successful acquisitions. Another 30% are unsure of what their next move will be but say that Australia ranks high on their list of potential investment destinations given the market’s many advantages and mid-market opportunities across sectors.
In this sixth issue of the Dealmakers report, we once again spoke with 60 M&A dealmakers for their first-hand insights and expectations regarding activity in the Australian mid-market in 2020 and beyond.
Key highlights include:
- Top geography: 90% of respondents will look to Australia for mid-market deals in 2020, compared to 73% who are looking to emerging Southeast Asia and 27% who say China.
- Key investor groups: 78% of respondents expect increases in foreign inbound deals in 2020, and 77% say private equity investors will likewise bolster investment.
- Sectors: TMT will be the top sector dealmakers turn to for deals, followed by Pharma, medical and biotech and Consumer.
